Nene Merit from The Wave Analytics discusses how behavioral data and science can bridge the gap between people's stated desire for stronger communities and their actual participation. The episode explores why traditional community initiatives fail, how behavioral insights reveal barriers to action, and demonstrates a case study where data-driven interventions achieved 91% more responses than conventional surveys.

What we learned

  1. 1 Practice a lot and work on translating technical concepts into something easy so that people who are not in data science can grasp it; you really need to be in data science itself to understand the full process of collecting data, aggregating it, cleaning it, standardizing it, and applying algorithms to find patterns and insights that lead to behavior change.

Founder · The Wave Analytics

The Wave Analytics is a data-driven behavioral intelligence company that uses behavioral data to understand human behavior and design interventions to change behavior in a positive direction, primarily in livability contexts such as littering, nuisance, and social isolation.

Challenge
Behavioral intelligence is a hard thing to sell because it is complicated and new, especially in the social housing setting and livability context; the combination of data science and behavior change still needs more recognition and understanding, and the education part is long.
Lesson
Practice a lot and work on translating technical concepts into something easy so that people who are not in data science can grasp it; you really need to be in data science itself to understand the full process of collecting data, aggregating it, cleaning it, standardizing it, and applying algorithms to find patterns and insights that lead to behavior change.
Looking for
I would like to reach out to people working in the housing sector, municipalities, and anybody involved in livability to see what we can do for each other in validating the behavioral loop detection method.
